About House for an Art Lover

Ranked among the finest Art Nouveau works, the House for an Art Lover remained unbuilt during the architect's lifetime. It was originally a disqualified entry in a magazine-run competition organized by German design magazine Zeitschrift Fur Innendekoration to create a large country house for a connoisseur of the arts. The drawings of House for an Art Lover helped build Mackintosh's international reputation and were eventually used to realize the building more than 60 years after his death. Ironically, these rejected drawings helped to establish Mackintosh's international reputation as a pioneer of the new modern style. This amazing house gives a chance to peek inside Mackintosh's renowned talent not just as an architect, but as an artist, designer, and pioneer of the Modern Movement.  The design of House for an Art Lover is used by Macintosh to evoke an ocean liner placed in the landscape. A horizontal emphasis expressed through the window placement and a large terrace lining the drawing room is featured. The 1990s magnificently-constructed rooms are representative of the Mackintosh style and encompass many of the ideas that recur throughout the work, including intricate wood paneling inset with colored glass, decorative gesso panels, and unique organic motifs incorporated into the carpets and furniture. Today, the House for an Art Lover is one of Glasgow's most popular cultural destinations, combining art galleries and exhibition spaces with an events venue, cafe, gift shop, and multipurpose artists studios. This iconic building is a fabulous tribute to art, design, and Charles Renne Macintosh.
