About Old Town Hall

Old Town Hall, as the name suggests, is the country's oldest stone building and one of the oldest town hall buildings still standing proudly in Bratislava. It was the town hall of the city from the 15th through the 19th centuries. It also used to be a prison, a mint, a municipal archive, an arsenal depository, and a place of trade and celebrations. The building has been renovated many times giving it characteristics of Renaissance, Baroque, and Neo-Renaissance styles. Today it houses the Bratislava City Museum where visitors can explore exhibits that tell the city's history - from the Middle Ages, the feudal justice system, torture instruments, antique weapons, armor, dungeons, paintings, and more. The tower has a viewing platform that rewards the visitors with great views of the main square and the city.

Must See

  • The unified complex of buildings from various time periods forms the core of the Old Town Hall.
  • The Bratislava City Museum is a major part of the town hall and features displays of the feudal justice system, as well as the beautiful interior and original furnishings from the municipal court.
  • Maximilian Fountain (also known as Roland's Fountain) is located at the center of the square. Legend has it that at New Year's midnight, the top of the statue mysteriously rotates.

How to reach

Take the tram number 4 to SND from the city center and walk about 2 minutes towards Hlavné námestie to reach the Old town hall. There is a tram every 8 minutes.

Buy a public transport ticket for 60 minutes that costs EUR 1.20; this ticket is good for almost all journeys within Bratislava. You can also travel with a ticket for 15 minutes for EUR 0.70 or a ticket for 30 minutes for EUR 0.90. For pets, bicycles or large luggage, you need to purchase a ticket for .35 cents and this is valid for 180 minutes.

If you are coming by taxi, it is a 13 minutes drive from the city center via Račianska/Route 502. It is 5 km away and will cost you 3 EUR.
