About Parc de la Ciutadella

Established in the middle of the 19th century, this vintage park was the city's only green space for decades. Take a closer look at the remnants of the fortress that still exists, used as a secondary school and the Catalan Parliament building. It features a large fountain (the Cascada), the city zoo, and a lake filled with rowboats. Fountains and sculptures decorate the park while several interesting buildings catch the eye of architecture buffs. The diligent sculptures and the style are just brilliant.

Additionally, there are random sculptures that make for great photo ops. The fountain/castle is breathtaking not just for its stunning visuals, but also for the elements that allow you to climb it, and engage with the water. The legendary Antonio Gaudi was the assistant architect when the Cascada was built in 1888. This park is both highly functional in design as well as highly entertaining. The museum housed in the park is built in the Modernistá style which later became world-famous. Another glory of the park is the Martorell Museum, a Neo-classical building, quite unusual for Barcelona. Visit the Umbracle, a palm-house that stands just south of the Martorell Museum. It has a vaulted wood-slate roof that allows rays of light inside the structure.
