About Park Guell, Barcelona

Where New York has Central Park, Barcelona has Park Guell. This green space in the heart of Barcelona covers some 19 hectares. But the history giving rise to Park Guell speaks to Barcelona's history, the expression of the modernist art movement, and the strong friendship between Guell and architect Antonio Gaudi.

In late 1800, Guell asked his friend and colleague Gaudi, to design an upscale residential neighbourhood in a park-like setting. So exclusive and unique was the neighbourhood that by 1914, only 2 of the envisioned 60 houses had been built; one for Gaudi and one for Guell. And so the neighbourhood project was abandoned in favour of a private garden. In 1926, the area became a public park. Gaudi's influence is everywhere here, from the organic layout to the garden walls, to the buildings. Gaudi's residence in Park Guell was converted to Gaudi's Museum, and in 1984, the area was recognised as a UNESCO world heritage site. A visit to Park Guell can be thoroughly relaxing and rejuvenating. It can also be a walk through Barcelona's modernist history, into the world of the indomitable architect, Antoni Gaudi.
