About Bernina Express

“Choo choo” your way from Chur in Switzerland through idyllic mountain landscapes to Tirano, Italy on the Bernina Express. Take a spectacular route from snow-capped regions and glaciers to palm trees on the other side. One the most iconic train ride in Switzerland, the Bernina Express goes through 55 tunnels, goes over 196 bridges, and over the 15-foot high Landwasser Viaduct. It winds its way along the World Heritage Site, the Rhaetian Railway through the magnificent natural scenery of the Albula and Bernina Passes. Journey to the highest point at 6,760 feet above sea level to the Ospizio Bernina. Catch a glimpse of the mountains and lakes as you chug by. Take the 4-hour ride along the 90-mile route. Every seat is a good seat with the panoramic cars for unobstructed views of alpine beauty.

How to reach

To get to the main railway station, you can use the metro or taxis.
Trains run in both directions, from Chur, Davos, or St. Moritz in Switzerland to Tirano in Italy. There are 25 stops along the route.
 

Tips

  • Take a coach trip to Milan and enjoy dinner against the spectacular backdrop of Milan Cathedral. 
  • Reservation required. Limited daily services, depending on where you board the train.
  • The Bernina Express has panoramic cars, more personal space, and an overall better atmosphere. 
  • The Bernina Express route runs all year round.
  • Visit in spring to see green fields and farming villages in all their colorful scenery.
  • Also, you can visit during winter to enjoy the view of frozen lakes, snow-covered mountains, and local skiers 
  • Overall one can travel at any time of the year to take this ride.
  • Keep in mind that trains can become full during busy times.
  • You only have to pay for your seat reservation and you will receive the reservations by email.
  • The price for a train reservation depends on the season.
  • The Bernina Express offers breathtaking views from the beautiful 1st and 2nd class panorama cars. 
  • Children aged 6 to 16 pay half the fare.
  • Fine regional snacks and refreshing drinks are served directly at your seat. 
  • If you are travelling to Tirano and/or Lugano you will need a passport or identity card to cross the border.
