The Kunstmuseum Basel is a Swiss national treasure, home to the largest public art collection in the country. It was the first municipally owned museum in the world, with a collection of works by Hans Holbein bought by the city of Basel in 1661. Paintings from the early 15th century to the present grace its walls. The largest collection of works by the Holbein family share space with Manet, Money, Gauguin, Cézanne, van Gogh, Picasso, and Munch. From the impressionist, expressionists, surrealism, and everything in between the collection holds work by Swiss, German, Italian, and American artists. Even Andy Warhol has hit spot. During World War II the Kunstmuseum was charged with protecting paintings by German-Jewish artists. They were brought to Switzerland in 1939 and are still on display in the museum.
