About Damascus Citadel

Located at the northwest corner of the old walled city of Damascus, the Citadel has always been an important tourist attraction. Despite being damaged several times due to the war and other historic events, the Citadel has been renovated and restored and stands proudly as a major landmark of Damascus. Unlike other medieval Arabic castles built on major hill-tops, the Citadel was built on flat ground at the same level as the rest of the city. Located at the bank of Barada river, the beautiful building houses 12 towers connected by curtain walls that have vaulted galleries. The Citadel has three gates, located on the north, east and west sides. Marvel at the old world charm and ancient tone of the Citadel; it is a must visit when you are in Damascus.
