About Holy Dormition Pochayiv Lavra

Do you believe in miracles? We do! This is why we have added the Holy Dormition Pochayiv Lavra to our bucket list of places to visit in Ukraine, and you should too. If not for the Holy Dormition Pochayiv Lavra, the beautiful small town of Pochayiv may have remained off tourists’ radars. If you don’t consider that a miracle, then hears this – the Virgin Mary is said to have left behind a footprint in rock, now called the “The Footprint of Our Lady!”

The Pochayiv Lavra is located atop a rocky hill, 75 meters above the town. Both believers and tourists flock in large numbers to this Lavra, because of its reputation of making miracles happen! The positive energy is palpable in this monastery. Apart from the picturesque location, the architecture of the Lavra is a sight to behold in itself. As soon as you enter the town, you are greeted with the sight of the monastery’s golden cupolas.

The Holy Dormition Pochayiv Lavra, after the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, is the most important Orthodox religious center in the country. As per legends, in the 13th Century, the cloister appeared, when Orthodox monks fleeing from the Mongol-Tatar invasion, settled on the mountain. They called the mountain Pochayiv, after the river Pochayna, where their monastery used to stand. Soon after the monks settled here, “The Footprint of Our Lady” rock came into existence. It was believed that healing water started pouring from the spot, and thus became the first miracle and main relic of this Lavra. This legend has played a huge role in the popularity of the monastery on a global level. This beautiful monastery has many more legends and relics to its credit, which can be experienced in its grandeur only upfront and close! For centuries, this Lavra has been the primary center of the believers of the Orthodox faith in Western Ukraine.
