About Buenos Aires

Vibrant, cosmopolitan and incredibly creative: that is Buenos Aires in three words. Argentina’s economic and cultural capital is a delicious concoction of European flair and Latin American vigour. The European influence can be seen, for example, in the city’s striking architecture, cobblestoned streets, classy neighbourhoods, gorgeous theatres and cafes. But what drives the city is its restless energy and creative exuberance, which are pure Latin American. It is reflected in the city’s unmatched nightlife, amazing food, local art scene, and the general attitude towards life. The birthplace of tango and Borges, Buenos Aires is a city like no other in Latin America.

Public Transport System

Subte (Underground)Buenos Aires has had an underground railway system for a long time. The first line opened in 1913 and is the oldest in entire Latin America. As of now, there are six lines (A, B, C, D, E, and H). The Subte is the fastest way to get around. To travel, you will need a SUBE card (rechargeable travel card), which you can buy and top up at stations or corner shops.BusBA is served by an extensive and well-connected bus system with two kinds of services: the 'colectivos' and the Metrobus. 'Colectivos' are operated by several private operators and run 24 hours a day. The Metrobus operates on dedicated lanes and serves select areas. You will need a SUBE card to travel. CyclingWith over 130km of cycle lanes, cycling is also a great way of seeing BA. The city has bike share scheme called Ecobici. You can hire them for one hour on weekdays and for two hours on weekendsTaxisAbout 40,000 licensed black and yellow taxis operate with fixed meters in BA. Fares are in Argentine pesos. You can also book private taxis called 'remises' through agencies or via the government's BA Taxi appTrainTrains are the best way to reach suburbs and other far-off destinations such as Tigre. You can travel using SUBE card or purchase tickets, which are quite cheapCar rentalsYou can also hire cars from rental companies in the city and from the two airports - Ezeiza and Jorge Newberry

Do’s:

  • Explore Buenos Aires on foot or bike instead of the usual bus tour.
  • Drink coffee at one of the city’s famous cafes.
  • Buy leather goods at Villa Crespo.
  • Get prepared for delays. If someone is late, just relax instead of sulking.
  • Get used to the idea of ’late’, for dining, dancing and pretty much else all happen quite late.
  • Try Argentinian beer and wine.
  • Have spare time for the wonderful street art.
  • Try attending a ’milonga’ (tango dance party).

Dont’s:

  • Drink in public places.
  • Eat on public transportation.
  • Get into arguments with locals about sensitive political issues unless you are well-versed about them.
  • Forget to say goodbye when leaving.

Night Life

Every superlative you ever heard about Buenos Aires' nightlife is true. The city really gets going at night. Filled with some of the trendiest nightclubs and bars you will find in Latin America, Palermo is the nightlife hub of the city. You can dance and drink till morning (yes, morning!) at Rose Bar, Kika, Niceto, INK Buenos Aires, Larc and the Elite Jet Lounge. If you are looking for something more relaxed, then Buenos Aires has great bars as well. Doppelganger, Napoles Bar, Victoria Brown Bar and Floreria Atlantico are classy places to eat and drink.

If it is tango you seek, head to Maldita and La Cathedral. And, not to forget splendid cafes like La Biblioteca Cafe and Cafe San Bernardo, they offer fantastic live music.
