About Pere Lachaise Cemetery

Pere Lachaise is arguably the most visited cemetery anywhere in the world. It was established as a public/municipal cemetery on the 21st of May, 1804 in Paris during the time of Napoleon. It covers 44 hectares or 110 acres which is generously filled with spectacular works of art that are equally as interesting as the ornate gravesites of famous individuals.

The cemetery is named after King Louis IV's confessor, Père de la Chaise, a priest who lived in a Jesuit residence that stood where the chapel stands today. Housing more than three lakh graves, this place is one of the world's most-visited secular cemeteries and the largest one in Paris. Within its silent and vast spaces lie the mortal remains of many a luminary such as Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison, Fredric Chopin, Gertrude Stein, Rossini and many more greats from many disciplines. The place has a mixture of serenity and eerie stillness intertwined into its beauteous man-made marvels and it continues to enthrall and attract millions of travelers all year through.
