About Parliament Buildings and Crown Jewels

The Hungarian Parliament building can be referred to as the pride of Budapest. The largest and tallest building in Hungary stands tall and majestic. This architectural marvel, designed by Hungarian architect Imre Steindl was inaugurated in 1896 to mark the one-thousandth anniversary of Hungary. Constructed beautifully in gothic-renaissance revival style, with a symmetric facade and massive dome. Take royal steps on the exquisite gold plated staircase XVII. It leads to the main floor of the palace and you'll be in awe of the opulence of the parliament and its stunning stained glass windows and ornate frescoes.  A stunning hexadecagon or sixteen sided hall is one of the unique features of this building. Out of the 691 splendidly decorated rooms, only a few are open for visitors. As many as 242 grand sculptures adorn the walls of this magnificent palace while statues of Hungarian & Transylvanian rulers and Hungarian military fill the rooms and corridors. The magnificent old upper house is a resplendent room with beautiful gold plated designs. Beautiful paintings of coats of arms of Hungary's royal families can be seen behind the podium. Statues of old Hungarian National groups adorn the pillars, while the ceilings are adorned by Hungarian crafts. The massive dome has a mesmerizing rib-vaulted ceiling replete with stunning glass paintings on the windows and the statues of the Hungarian rulers adorn its pillars. It is here that the most prized possession of Hungary, the crown jewels are displayed. Do check out the museum located in the visitors center for other prized possessions.  Watch how this spectacular building, which dominates the skyline in the day, transforms the river Danube into a stunning dazzling beauty when it is lit up in the night.
