Founded in April 1979, Iran was also known as Persia until the mid 20TH century. It is the world’s 18th most populous country. Iran is home to one of the world’s oldest major civilizations, with historical and urban settlements dating back to 4000BC. The name Iran comes from the word Aryanam, meaning “Land of Aryans”. Iran has taken several turns as a superpower empire and has been overrun by a number of invaders. Though the official language is Persian, Iran being an ethnically diverse nation, speaks different dozens of different languages and dialects.
The Iranian culture is one of the most influential cultures in the world. One of the defining characteristics is the cultural elasticity which is a clue to its historical longevity. It is a mountainous and arid country. Much of Iran consist of desert plateau, surrounded by lofty mountain ranges, where most of the population lives. Iran is proved as the second most natural gas reserves and is widely recognized as energy empire. Iran is also one of the few Shia countries.
Iran’s capital and largest city, Tehran, has the worst air pollution in the world. Nearly half of Iran has a desert climate. It receives less than 4 inch of precipitation each year. Iran has only one river, the Karun which can be navigated by boat only for short distances.
