About National Museum of Anthropology

Established in 1964, the National Museum of Anthropology is the largest and most visited museum in Mexico City. The museum has 22 rooms in the built-up area of more than 45 thousand square meters. The exhibits are mainly classified under Archaeology and Ethnography categories. The collection dates back to 1790. In 2017, the museum had 2,336,115 visitors. Also known as Museo Nacional de Antropologia, it is considered as a national entity and a symbol of unity. The exhibits range from Pre-Columbian artifacts and Aztec Ruins to post-modern Columbian history. The museum is considered as an icon amongst the attractions of Mexico City and is also recognized as one of the most comprehensive archeological museums in the world. A walk through the museum will take visitors on an entirely different level of spiritual and historic journey providing extensive information about how the present and past of human civilizations are connected, especially shedding light on Latin-American history.

  • The architecture of the museum building has a courtyard with a huge concrete umbrella surrounded by exhibition halls.
  • The exhibits reflect the life of Mexican people prior to Spanish colonization.
  • Start with the Aztec, Oaxaca, and Maya rooms.
  • The museum's collections include the “Aztec Calendar," Stone of the Sun, treasures recovered from the Mayan civilization, a model of the location and layout of the former Aztec capital Tenochtitlan, the site of which is now occupied by the central area of modern-day Mexico City. 
  • In the room Teotihuacan you can try VR glasses. 
  • The museum also hosts visiting exhibits focusing on other cultures of the world. 

How to reach

Metro Auditorium (Line 7) and Chapultepec Metro (Line 1). The Museum is approximately 1.3 km away from the metro stations.

Tips

  • Free guided tours are available for foreigners in Spanish, English, French or Italian languages. A group of minimum 5 persons is required for the tour.
  • Photography is allowed for personal use only.
  • Do not eat food in the exhibition halls. 
  • Do not touch the archaeological, ethnographic or mural pieces. It is illegal. 
  • Do not enter under the waterfall of "The Umbrella," or get wet in the water mirror. 
  • There are security and cloakroom available. 
  • The restaurant is located on the ground floor of the museum.
  • A store is located on the side of the lobby where you get nice inexpensive T-shirts.
