About Amber Palace

Amber Palace, Amber Fort, Amer Palace, and Amer Fort are just different names for the fort in Amer, Rajasthan near Jaipur. The colossal palace is known for its red sandstone and marble walls, ramparts, and many gates and cobblestone paths. The four levels each are flanked by a courtyard. Climbing the stairs here is quite a good exercise, so a visit to the Diwan-I-Am, Diwan-I-Khas, Sheesh Mahal and Sukh Niwas is something that needs to be tried.

Enter through the Ganesh Gate where you’ll also find a temple dedicated to Shila Devi given to the maharaja in 1604. Before taking the stairs to the main palace, be sure to visit the Siladevi Temple, a small temple with doors in silver relief work. Head back down to go up to the other courtyards.

Latticed galleries with double rows of columns in the Hall of Public Audience are capped with elephants. Tour the maharaja’s rooms and marvel at the Hall of Victory, known for its panels and multi-mirrored ceiling. The marble panels in the room are carved with insects and flowers. The Hall of Pleasure is directly opposite, with a channel that used to carry water through the room.

The maharaja, of course, had many wives and concubines and would visit them at night in their rooms. The Zenana was built so the others wouldn’t know. Such is the grand stature of the palace concealing amongst it untold tales of legends and royalty.
